Another year and another return visit to enjoy the sublime taste of oysters at Whitstable at their annual festival.
This year, See Yun came along and, after eventually finding somewhere to park, we managed to join in the festivities starting with their procession of the “lady of the sea” through the town.
At the packed quayside fresh oysters were exchanging hands every few minutes or so at the various stalls. We started with a plate of Irish oysters before having to queue for ages for our next plates of local oysters along with mussels, cockles, and crayfish for a bit of variety too.
With our fill of oysters, we walked along the beach to see the other events of the day: sea rescue dogs at work, traditional morris dancing, and a jazz band play.
Feeling more peckish again and for our finalfood foray, we hit up the Whitstable Oyster Company for more shucked oysters which we ate sitting by the seafront – not a bad way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
We finished the day walking off all the food we ate on Whitstable Beach at low tide where, as per tradition, we did a “jumping jack” shot to complete a magnificent day at the sea side.
My thanks for See Yun for doing all the driving!
