Iceland – Part 4

Day 4 of our trip and we left Reykjavik behind this time heading north-west to check out the spectacular coastline of the Snaefellsjokull Peninsula.

With another long drive ahead of us we raided the hotel buffet breakfast before setting out on the road with our trusty sat-nav to guide us. Along the way, the natural beauty we had seen on the southern coastal road continued as we crossed the Borgarfjordur and followed the empty road ever northwards.

Arriving in Stykkisholmur we climbed the nearby island of Sugandisey with its cute lighthouse on its summet and were rewarded by this expansive vista of Breioafjordur. Lunch was at the highly recommended Narfeyrarstofa restaurant which naturally had some of the best seafood See Yun and I had tasted. I went for the mussels whilst she went for the breaded fish and I would’ve driven back there just for the food … it was that good.

Before heading to the southern coastline of the Snaefellsjokull Peninsula we did a quick stop at the futuristically-styled Stykkisholmskirkja. I really do love how the Icelandic build their churches. They are nowhere as old as those in Rome but somehow I like them more.

Next stop was the windswept Buoavik with its yellow-grey sand and lone church standing solitary against the elements. See Yun was my trusty tripod carrier (thanks girl!) and I spent ages watching the waves crash onto the basalt rock.

Driving a bit further, we stopped at Arnarstapi to walk along the coastal path to Hellnar where I was blown away by the sheer force of Mother Nature at work. The photos of the coastline don’t really capture its magnificence nor the thunder of the waves exploding over the immovable cliffs nor the majestic swell of the sea itself.

We spent hours just taking in the view before it started to get dark and we made our way back to Arnarstapi where we dined on freshly caught cod at Feroapjonustan Snojofell. Suitably filled we drove back on the empty road to Reyjkavik, punctuated by having to watch out for wild horses on the oad, before we caught a glimpse of blue sky as we neared our destination after a long yet amazing day.
