Meeting up with Werda for a long overdue catch up, I made a rare visit to the heart of the City to try out her recommendation of The Anthologist for dinner.
Entering the chic bar I was initially disappointed as it seemed to be similar to The Refinery – all style and drinking and very little emphasis on food. However, they had a separate dining area away from the City types intent on drinking the place dry and so we got a great position sitting on the corner of the kitchen counter with a view of the diners as well as the kitchen too.
Being such a hot and humid day, we started off with refreshingly cold virgin cocktails before moving quickly onto starters of crispy squid with ginger, pink peppercorns, and a citrus mayo along with prawn and lemongrass lollipops with balsamic reduction and dressed leaves. Although it all seemed a bit too clever the food was actually quite tasty and got us ready for main course.
Werda went for the linguine vongole which, curiously, came with a tomato sauce but still tasted delicious. I had a craving for fish and chips so went for that and it was good to see that they were using fresh fish and batter. Though next time I think that I will go for Werda’s dish instead as nothing really beats a proper fish & chippie!
Finishing up the meal, we shared a warm homemade chocolate brownie served with vanilla ice-cream before calling it a night after a great catch up. Always love hanging out with Werda … we usually spend the night laughing and teasing the hell of out each other!
Overall, considering that my expectations dropped as I walked in, it turned out to be quite alright with a bubbly atmosphere, good service, and straightforward simple dishes with prices not to make your eyes water … too much!
