Taking a break from the midst of job hunting at the end of April and celebrating See Yun’s mammoth road trip from Istanbul to London because of the ash cloud, we hit up Southwold Beach that Rough Guide recommended.
We were lucky enough to have a warm sunny day so it made driving through the countryside really quite enjoyable.
Arriving in Southwold I was pleasantly surprised to see that the beach was actually sandy. We started by exploring the pier which ranged from the curious (such as the Quantum Tunnelling Telescope) to the heartfelt.
Then we walked along the beach with its sands stretching out in front of us and lined all the way with beach huts. Amazingly, especially for a clear day, it was deserted and we were grateful to be a world away from the hordes of visitors that pack out Brighton Beach.
Wondering where the town centre was the massive lighthouse kinda gave it away. Southwold is a tiny town but it had these quaint shops along the high street, colourful houses, and this gem of a church which looked pretty ordinary on the outside but had this spectacular interior as well as the biggest font cover I’ve ever seen!
Then it was back strolling along the beach with See Yun appreciating the view and the sound of the waves crashing onshore before we grabbed a snack and started to make our way back to Southend.
We ended the day with dinner at Pipe of Port to try out some of their massive pies. Completely stuffed us silly but not so much that we didn’t also enjoy this sublime lemon meringue pie too! :D
