Krakow – Part 5

Final day in Krakow spent touring the vast Wieliczka Salt Mine before catching our return flight to London.

After a blindingly fast four days enjoying our first visit to Poland and seeing in the advent of 2010, it was suddenly our last day in Krakow and almost time to return home. But before doing so we finally went on our tour around the salt mine that we missed out the previous day which we were thankfully able to fit into the half-day we had before our flat.

And it was definitely worth the visit … originating from the 13th century it didn’t stop production until 1996 reaching down to a depth of 327 m through 300 km of passageways and stairways. But most impressive was the highlight of the tour – the Salt Cathedral and its hanging rock salt crystal chandeliers. Carved out by miners its a vast space and still in regular use as a place of worship by the town above.

Then there was just time for a quick dessert and a play in the snow before heading off to the airport where See Yun and Wendy wrote a really sweet message in my guidebook to commemorate our trip together.
