Day 4 and a memorable tour through the Stalinist town of Nowa Huta on a good ol’ Trabant car before feasting at Miod Malina for our last dinner of the trip.
Our original plan was to tour the Wieliczka Salt Mine in the morning but thanks to a mix-up we ended up visiting the Pharmacy Museum stuffed full of apothecary curios instead.
However, the highlight of the day was taking an Eastern Bloc Trabie around Nowa Huta which Stalin commissioned as a model city which didn’t quite work out as planned. Don’t worry we didn’t try driving but had a good tour guide who kept us entertained as we drove around what would’ve been Soviet utopia. It was a novel way of seeing a completely different side of Krakow though
We finished off the tour with a visit to Arka Pana (Lord’s Ark) that Bishop Karol Wojtyla consecrated. And if that name is familiar that’s because he eventually became Pope John Paul II.
Completing the day was a feast of a dinner at Miod Malina that both friends and the guide book highly recommended. With excellent service, superb food (especially dessert), and a bit of alcohol, it was a fitting way to celebrate our trip.
Coming up next … finally getting to be impressed with the scale and beauty of the Wieliczka Salt Mine before catching our flight back to London.
