With the overcast skies of the previous two days giving way to clear blue skies, I finally saw the beauty of Wellington nestled in the picturesque hills and tranquil bays for the first time.
So we took the car and spent the early morning exploring Evans Bay, with its rusting hulk, Kau Bay, with its crystal clear water, before ending up on Scorching Bay for brunch. Although it wasn’t as hot as its name suggested, it was still a beautiful place to walk along the pristine beach and just take in the fresh air and the view of the mountains on the opposite side.
After playing with the kids on the beach, with the sand going everywhere!, we enjoyed a scrumptious brunch outdoors courtesy of the amusingly named Chocolate Fish Cafe. I went for another full brunch again and wasn’t disappointed at all. Though, with this kind of view it would be hard!
Then with Clara having to take Nico home for his early afternoon nap, I went with Richard and Tomas to ride the funicular up to the top of the Botanic Gardens to get a different view over looking Wellington. A beautiful place for a walk and, of course, we had to stop by the playground for Tomas to have a go on the rides before catching up with Clara and Nico at sunset for tea in the garden’s conservatory.
With such a long day none of us were in the mood to cook so a good excuse to take out sushi and tempura from the new Japanese restaurant nearby. The nigiri was excellent and we enjoyed their take on the various maki combinations they came up with.
Next up … my solo day in Wellington exploring Matiu-Soames Island in the morning followed by an exhilarating 4×4 coastal drive to a seal colony in the afternoon.
