There’s nothing quite like being woken by up two kids to really absolutely make sure that you get out of bed. I don’t recall ever having that much energy in the morning when I was younger … or is that because I’m now too old to remember … eeek!
With Richard attending a composting course I spent most of the day with Clara and the boys. We started with a short walk in the mist-covered Owhiro Bay followed up by a superb Kiwi-style breakfast at the stylish and chilled out Southern Cross. Loved their poached eggs and something that I’m going to learn how to do for myself on the weekends.
As it was still pouring outside I decided to visit Te Papa and volunteered to take Tomas with me without knowing quite what I was letting myself in for. So whilst I didn’t actually get to see much myself I just enjoyed following Tomas around making sure that he was enjoying himself, didn’t get hurt, and that I didn’t lose him. Don’t think that Clara would’ve been happy if I didn’t bring him back with me! :P
At one point I was wondering if other parents were going to wonder why Tomas was me since we’re obviously not related! But the best part was the constant barrage of questions from Tomas. Top question of the day was: “Sam, what’s electricity?”. So much for all my education and my life experience … completely flummoxed on how to explain that coherently to a 4 year old. Doh!
By the time that I got back I was utterly exhausted and collapsed on the sofa. To which Clara jokingly reminded me that I still had to feed Tomas, bathe him, read to him, and get him to bed. A lot of respect for parents for just pushing through the tiredness and getting it all done. No wonder they go to bed early – they need it!
Finishing off the evening, Tomas asked me to read to him which was really sweet and then I heading back downstairs to share my experiences of parenting with Clara and Richard – much to their amusement!
Next up, the sun finally emerges and we have a full family day starting at the seaside and finishing in the botanical gardens.
