RTW – Melbourne – Part 3

Day 14 and spent my final day in Melbourne immersed in Queen Victoria Market, inspired by the street art scene in Hosier Lane, and feeling at home by the sea at St Kilda.

Having enjoyed my walking tour the previous day, I did another covering Queen Victoria Market. Just imagine Borough Market but considerably larger, better value for money, and where the locals regularly go for their groceries. I loved  the classic style of the meat and dairy stalls conveying a sense of quality artisanal production. From the fresh bread, the focus on seasonal produce, to the sheer variety on offer … it was really a epicurean’s emporium.

At the end, during which I got to try kangaroo, we stopped at Xocolatl – Lynn’s favourite chocolate shop. They had divine combinations of flavours beyond the classics and so made the perfect wedding present for Justine in Perth whom I was going to see the next day.

Next up, I explored more of the street art scene at the famous Hosier Lane where I watched a two artists at work whilst admiring the graffiti on the walls, ventilation pipes, mesh doors, even dustbins … pretty much everywhere!

Coffee at Degraves is a bit of an institution in Melbourne so whilst waiting for Avi I enjoyed a long black there before we headed to St Kilda. I have a certain affinity for the sea. Just something about being near the ocean and the waves that I find both liberating and calming. We had a good chat and walk together along the pier – enjoying the warm afternoon sun and a clear blue sky.

Finishing off the day, a vegetarian meal at the Moroccan Soup Bar with Lynn, her family, and two of their friends. It was all the way cross-town but worth the traffic to get there. Especially the cube of turkish delight I had. Sugary heaven!
